Every product requires a unique product code that can be used to locate and refer to it within Pimberly. The identifier settings describe the format that the unique identifier of all products within this schema must follow, either for manually created IDs or system-generated IDs.
Primary identifier name
The primary identifier name is the preferred name you wish to use for the unique identifier for products (e.g. 'Product code', 'SKU', 'Primary ID', etc.). The primary identifier may or may not correspond with a product code you use within your business already.
Primary description attribute
Once attributes have been created within the system, users have the option to specify an attribute that has been assigned to this schema as the attribute which contains the default description for all products within this schema. For this to be set, attributes must have been created and assigned to the schema through the Taxonomy settings.
If a fixed character length for primary identifiers is required, this can be defined here. Automatically generated IDs will be padded to the correct length (i.e. for a character length of 5, the number '10' would be generated as '00010'). This character length does not include any specified prefixes or suffixes. Manually created IDs and imported IDs will be rejected if they do not meet the character length restriction.
Prefixes & suffixes
Required prefixes and/or suffixes can be specified, and do not count towards the character length restriction. Automatically generated IDs will include any specified prefixes or suffixes. Manually created or imported IDs which do not include a specified prefix or suffix will be rejected.
The format of the primary identifier can be restricted to numbers only, alphanumeric characters only, or to allow numbers, letters and symbols. The restrictions on the format of a primary identifier do not include the prefix or suffix (e.g. a numeric identifier can still contain a prefix with letters). Autogenerated IDs are currently only generated in numeric format. Manually created or imported IDs which contain characters that are not allowed by the schema format will be rejected.
Selecting the 'force uppercase' option will require that any letters in the primary identifier are in uppercase format. This does not include any letters in prefixes or suffixes. Manually created or imported IDs which contain lowercase characters will be rejected.
Auto generate IDs
The 'auto generate IDs' function will automatically generate an incremental identifier for new products created manually or through the ad hoc import function when the primary identifier field is left blank. Automatically generated IDs will follow the specified character length and include any specified prefixes or suffixes. When 'auto generate IDs' is enabled, this does not prevent the user from specifying primary identifiers - any user-specified IDs will take precedence over system generated IDs.
