All taxonomy subclasses automatically have any attributes within the default attribute set applied. Default attributes are mandatory for all taxonomy subclasses and product types, and cannot be removed.
Creating a child subclass will automatically pre-populate that class with the attributes currently assigned to the parent class. These attributes can be removed or added to as needed.
Where there is a similar attribute setup that is applicable to a class and its child classes, it is often easier to assign the attributes to the parent class first before creating the children.
When setting up a taxonomy for the first time, the taxonomy view will show only the taxonomy root (the highest level in the taxonomy tree).
To create a taxonomy subclass, select the class which you wish to create the class under and select 'Create Subclass'.
This will bring up the Edit Taxonomy dialog, where the default attribute set will be assigned to all product types by default.
A unique name must be assigned to the class, which can be changed at any time.
Unique codes can be optionally assigned to taxonomy classes. Assigning codes to taxonomy classes will sort the list of classes into ascending order within that hierarchy level, for example:
This ordering will apply throughout the system where the taxonomy structure can be seen, such as the taxonomy tree settings screen, the products page filter, and the ad hoc import dialog.
When viewing the taxonomy tree, the codes can be toggled on or off through selecting the 'Toggle codes' button.
